Positioning Framework for Financial Advisors

A step-by-step framework for defining your advisory firm's unique positioning against competitors who all say the same thing.

Your positioning is broken if a prospect could swap your name with a competitor's and your website would still make sense. Here is how to fix it today.

The Fill-in-the-Blank Positioning Template

"We help [specific client type] [achieve specific outcome] through [your unique approach], unlike [how competitors do it]."

5 Examples by Firm Type:

Financial Advisory:

"We help tech founders within 3 years of exit build post-liquidity wealth strategies that preserve optionality, unlike traditional advisors who default to one-size-fits-all retirement plans."

Law Firm:

"We help mid-market DFW businesses resolve commercial disputes in 90 days or less, unlike large firms that bill on complexity and drag out timelines."

Management Consulting:

"We help healthcare systems reduce operational costs by 15-20% through process redesign, unlike generalist firms that deliver reports but not implementation."

Dermatology / Healthcare:

"We help professionals aged 35-55 achieve natural-looking results through conservative cosmetic dermatology, unlike med spas that push aggressive treatments."

Real Estate Brokerage:

"We help relocating executives find and close on homes in North Dallas within 30 days, unlike traditional agents who treat every buyer the same."

Competitor Analysis Worksheet

Fill this out for your top 3 competitors:

2. ___________
3. ___________

Look at the "Gap You Could Own" column. That is your positioning territory.

Deploy It Everywhere

Your positioning is not a tagline. It goes in every place a prospect encounters your brand. Here is exactly where and how:

LinkedIn Headline

Before: "Senior Financial Advisor | Wealth Management | Retirement Planning"

After: "Helping tech founders build post-liquidity wealth strategies | [Firm Name]"

Website Hero Section

Before: "Personalized Financial Planning for Your Goals"

After: "Wealth strategy for founders preparing for exit. Built for the complexity traditional advisors are not equipped to handle."

Elevator Pitch (under 15 seconds)

Before: "We're a financial advisory firm that helps clients achieve their goals."

After: "We build wealth strategies specifically for tech founders going through an exit. Most advisors treat a $10M liquidity event like a regular retirement. We don't."

The Positioning Pressure Test

Answer these 5 questions. If any answer is "no," your positioning needs more work:

  1. Does your positioning exclude at least 50% of potential clients? (It should. That is the point.)
  2. Would a competitor in your market be unable to truthfully make the same claim?
  3. Can you say it in one sentence without using the words "experienced," "dedicated," "trusted," or "client-focused"?
  4. Does your ideal client hear it and think "that is exactly what I need"?
  5. Can every person on your team deliver it consistently in 15 seconds?
